The Longer Story
Born and raised in Alberta, Edmonton based singer-songwriter Jessica Heine has spent more than two decades building a reputation as a compelling performer, gifted storyteller, and distinctive voice within the Canadian folk community. Whether delivering an intimate lyric or a soaring chorus, Heine's voice has a remarkable ability to command attention, equally capable of a delicate whisper and a room-shaking wail.
A classically trained vocalist, Heine performs regularly with Edmonton's award-winning Chronos Vocal Ensemble, but her artistic home has always been in songwriting. Drawn to folk music's power to connect people through story, she developed her craft through years of performing at open mics, folk clubs, and community stages, forging lasting relationships within Alberta's vibrant folk scene.
Over time, those grassroots beginnings grew into a career that has taken her across Western Canada and beyond. Her third album, Goodbye Party, released in 2018 and produced by Peter Stone of 100 Mile House and Rosina Cove, marked a significant turning point. Following its release, Heine signed with Fallen Tree Records, appeared at festivals including the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Canmore Folk Music Festival, and Jasper Folk Music Festival, and toured throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. The album also received radio play across North America, introducing her songwriting to new audiences from coast to coast.
Throughout her career, Heine has found unique ways to bridge her folk and classical worlds. Collaborations with Edmonton choral ensembles, including Chronos and Vocal Alchemy, have expanded the scope of her music, bringing rich vocal textures and dynamic arrangements to songs already known for their emotional depth. These collaborations have highlighted both the versatility of her writing and the breadth of her musical influences.
The years following the pandemic brought a renewed focus to Heine's creative practice and ultimately led to her fourth full-length album, Build Again. While her earlier work explored love, storytelling, grief, loss, and transition, Build Again turns its gaze toward resilience, renewal, and the quiet work of rebuilding after difficult seasons. The album pairs emotionally resonant storytelling with rich arrangements and confident vocal performances.
